Below you will see several sentences. Re-word these sentences using one of the idioms you have learned in this unit OR add to the sentence by inserting one of the idioms you have learned. Write your sentence in the text box provided. Think carefully about which idiom best fits in each context. Be creative and have fun!

 

For example:

I ended up telling my mother she should get some winter products for her new car. But the problem is that she did not know my dad was going to give her a new car for her birthday. It was supposed to be a surprise!

You could say:

"I ended up telling my mother she should get some winter products for her new car. But the problem is that she did not know my dad was going to give her a new car for her birthday. It was supposed to be a surprise! I am so sorry I let the cat out of the bag!"

  2. I can’t believe you lost my assignment! Now I will have to do it all over again!
  3. I read my book while I was on the treadmill, so I had some extra time to watch a movie last night.
  4. My best friend’s is getting married next month and he wants me to be his best man.
  5. I got myself a Prada bag for my birthday last week. Gosh, it cost me so much money! I paid about $2000 for it!
  6. I have a big presentation tomorrow. I am training to be a conductor and tomorrow is my first time in front of such a big audience. I am shaking at the thought.
  7. I went to a wedding party last night and drank beer as if it was water. When I woke up this morning, the ceiling was spinning, the cat was smiling at me and the clock was showing 25 o’clock!
  8. I got a really bad grade at college, so my mum said I cannot go out with my friends until my grades are better.
  9. Jennifer wanted to take her boyfriend on a trip to a country he had never been to before, but her best friend Anne ended up telling him, thinking he already knew everything.
  10. When Pamela saw her boyfriend kissing another girl, she got really angry. 
  11. Some people buy a house with a garage not because they need it for a car, but simply to have a place where they can store everything they do not need. My friend Paul, for example, has almost everything he ever bought stored in his garage.
  12. Next week will be simply mad. I have three exams, 2 papers due and my friend’s party to attend. Therefore, I don’t think I will be sleeping much, since I have a lot to study.
  13. If people in poor countries got paid to converse with others who are learning their language in rich countries, we would solve two problems: poverty and lack of foreign language skills!
  14.  There is no point in getting annoyed at people and screaming at them when things go wrong: it won’t make things better.
